Ground-breaking music festival Unsound returns for a specially curated evening highlighting some of the most inventive talents in adventurous music.

London based composer Mica Levi will present a selection of pieces for large-scale string ensemble, including a new UK premiere commissioned by Unsound, and performed by the Sinfonietta Cracovia.

Sinfonietta Cracovia is one of the leading chamber ensembles in Poland, praised for its performances of contemporary music from the avant-garde to film music. It is famous for its interpretations of the works of Krzysztof Penderecki, the mentor and patron to many of the orchestra’s projects.

Raphael Roginski is a guitarist, composer, improviser and musicologist. For his Barbican debut, he brings us music from his new album Žaltys (Unsound, 2024), recently named The Quietus’s 'Album of the Week' and the Guardian's 'Folk Album of the Month', with music inspired by time, memory and the Polish-Lithuanian borderlands.

Mica Levi (Micachu And The Shapes)

Previously known as a DJ and singer-songwriter in her band Micachu and the Shapes, with whom the London Sinfonietta have collaborated, Levi was catapulted to international fame and earned herself a BAFTA nomination for the film score for Under The Skin (2014).

Raphael Roginski

Guitarist Raphael Roginski has studied the mystical movements of African composers and poets from the first touch of the string to the sounds that are still being created today. Though his music sounds like something new, it has been with him since childhood and is actually something we all heard a long time ago. Whether this music is performed on the harp, kora, guitar, whether it is performed as an improvisation or in the genre of jazz or classical, it is just music – an evolutionary tale of human beings’ first touch of string.
