EFG London Jazz Festival 2013: Amarcord Nino Rota
One of the most loved film composers in the history of cinema, Nino Rota created the musical backdrop to films by Frederico Fellini and Luchino Visconti, and received an Academy Award for his score to Francis Ford Coppola’s masterpiece The Godfather Part II.
After Rota's death in 1979, legendary American producer Hal Willner (Marianne Faithfull, Lou Reed, William S. Burroughs, Laurie Anderson, Saturday Night Live) set off to record Amarcord Nino Rota (originally released in 1981), widely viewed as the first musical tribute album, featuring then-lesser known musicians like Wynton Marsalis and Bill Frisell with some inspirational arrangements of Rota’s music.
Inspired by the Amarcord Nino Rota album, this evening pairs new arrangements of Nino Rota’s compositions with stills from the films, evoking the cinematic context in which these great pieces of music were originally heard.
