EFG London Jazz Festival 2013: David Sanborn + Bob James + Zoe Rahman
David Sanborn's eloquent alto saxophone sound is one of the most distinctive in jazz today. Joining forces with the charismatic, multi award-winning pianist Bob James takes them into richly rewarding new ground, paying tribute to an iconic earlier partnership of jazz greats - Dave Brubeck and Paul Desmond.
Sanborn and James perform together for the first time in the UK at this year's EFG London Jazz Festival with the music from their second album together, Quartette Humaine, due to be released next week on Sony's Okeh label - their first collaboration since the platinum-selling, GRAMMY award-winning album Double Vision. A terrific live band which also features one of today's greatest drummers, Steve Gadd.
Support comes from MOBO award-winning British pianist Zoe Rahman.
This event takes place at Barbican Centre, which has achieved Silver Status for disabled access from Attitude Is Everything.
A superb, instantly recognizable saxophonist, David Sanborn is one of the most influential musicians of the last 20-30 years. Sanborn has enjoyed considerable commercial success but is equally at home playing groovy, intelligent hard-bop as he is smooth-jazz as anyone who has heard his recent Blue Note album with vibe-great Bobby Hutcherson can attest to.

The career of Bob James is long, varied and continues to evolve at every turn. From his first days in Marshall, Missouri, the music of Bob James has captivated audiences throughout the world.
While James is recognized as one of the progenitors of smooth jazz, his music has also had a profound effect on the history of hip hop, having been sampled often. Two of James’ songs – “Nautilus” from 1974’s One and “Take Me to the Mardi Gras” from 1975’s Two – are among the most sampled in hip hop history.
