A Song For Seacole

Mary Seacole, the celebrated Victorian doctress and nurse, was born in 1805 of Jamaican/Scottish parents in Kingston, Jamaica.

She overcame repeated rejections in London with her offer to nurse wounded soldiers in the Crimean war by funding her own passage to the battle zone. Here she became famous her use of Creole herbal remedies to treat cholera and dysentry and for her compassionate and tender nursing care.

The recent threat to remove her from being taught within the national curriculum resulted in 36,015 people signing an online petition launched in January 2013 by Operation Black Vote. It was a successful campaign as Mary Seacole is now more firmly emebedded in the proposed new curriculum.

The fundraising appeal for her first ever statue, to be sited in the grounds of St Thomas’ hospital London, has recently reached halfway to the target.
