Tonight we will be hosting an evening dedicated to one of the greatest saxophonists the UK has ever produced, the brilliant alto player Peter King, who very sadly passed away in 2020. He led our Sax Summit, which features a remarkable 4-sax front line, for well over a decade and so we have renamed this evening in his honour.
A regular at the Club Mornington Lockett, who performed here with Peter for many years, is one of the UK’s leading tenor sax players. A former member of the Ronnie Scott quintet he has worked with singer Sarah Jane Morris and the Tracey’s - Stan and Clark - and was the driving force behind the brilliant “Celebrating the Jazz Couriers” quintet. A beautifully fluent and inventive alto saxophonist Rachael Cohen is widely considered one or the leading voices of her generation. The first female artist to be signed to Whirlwind Records she is a respected composer and arranger and has been listed in American magazine ‘Downbeat’ as a “Rising Star” on three separate occasions. A 2020 BBC Young Jazz Musician of the Year competition finalist, winner of the Rising Star category in the 2019 British Jazz Awards and three-time Parliamentary Jazz Award nominee, Alex Clarke’s tasteful, melodic style and warm, round, tone fit perfectly with the straight-ahead jazz standard and bebop repertoire she performs. With a focus on swing Fraser Smith channels the sound and language of the “big US Tenor men” and has built a significant reputation on the UK scene. Including work alo

Rachael Cohen
Rachael Cohen, a London-based alto saxophonist and composer, is one of the brightest emerging stars of her generation. Her infectious tone mixed with her uncanny lyricism as both a composer and improviser have gained her a great deal of attention in the UK and beyond. The Guardian has recently asserted that “Cohen takes a softly devious approach reminiscent of Lee Konitz – but, as with the canny Cool School veteran, the quietness is deceptive and the subtlety is in the weighting of phrases and the hipness with which she plays off the rhythm section.” Emusic noted “Saxophonist Cohen crafts some deceptively simple melodies, where nuance and subtlety provide great rewards.” One of Rachael’s strongest attributes is her lyrical and controlled phrasing as an improviser, which she delivers as if telling a story with the ease and sophistication of someone twice her age. Originally hailing from the Shetland Islands, Rachael began her musical education on the piano at age 4.
