Bright Phoebus Revisited: Richard Hawley + John Smith + Kami Thompson
Some of today’s top musicians are set to gather at Liverpool Philharmonic in October to tell an important, but as yet untold, chapter in the history of English music…
…This is the story of a great lost classic album written by the late Lal Waterson and Mike Waterson, two folk luminaries and members of the legendary Waterson family, Bright Phoebus was released in 1972 on the Trailer label. It also featured contributions by Martin Carthy, Richard Thompson and Maddy Prior, as well as a host of other friends and relations.
This magical collection of very English song writing is the only album of Lal and Mike's to feature original rather than traditional songs. Bright Phoebus mixes poetic ballads of life, death, love and longing with a surreal world view and humour, with a Sgt Pepper and Bonzo Dog pop-sensibility. It has long been acknowledged as one of the finest achievements of the British folk revival, despite the fact that it has been out of print for many years.
In October 2013, ‘Bright Phoebus Revisited’ will draw together the remaining members of the Waterson family plus very special guests in a unique celebration of the life and work of Lal and Mike through their music. Songs from the album will be performed live for the very first time along with previously unheard and unreleased songs by Lal & Mike. Guests include Brit award-winning singer/songwriter, Richard Hawley, up and coming steel-string guitarist and singer, John Smith and Kami Thompson, daughter of renowned musicians Richard and Linda and brother to Teddy. Kami’s debut album was released in 2011 and she has recently signed to Edwyn Collins’ record label.
This event takes place at Liverpool Philharmonic Hall, which has achieved Bronze Status for disabled access from Attitude Is Everything.
A guitarist's guitarist who has played with the likes of Pulp, Longpigs and Robbie Williams, now out on his own with a repertoire of original songs melding classic Americana with true grit Northern Britain.

John Smith's mesmerising percussive guitar and storytelling has been winning fans everywhere. Whether it be playing the guitar lap-style like a drum, detuning the strings mid-chorus or just straight-forward rumbling fingerstyle, the Devon man's playing has prompted both hushed appreciation and riotous standing ovations.
'John Smith again demonstrates why he is the guitarists’ guitarist. His steel-strung acoustic playing adding a beguiling complexity to songs that possess a sharp communicative clarity and directness' (The Sunday Times)
'A man with one of those rattling hearts. It's a true heart. It's a hurt heart' (Daytrotter)
'Songs that impress with the beauty of John's guitar work and intertwined vocals. Staggeringly good' (Acoustic)
'Beyond beautiful' (Jo Whiley, Radio 2).
