Behind the Scenes: Theatre Design and Film-making Mini Courses

Carriageworks Theatre, Studio 12 and Breeze Arts Festival are teaming up this May half-term to provide young people with a free, in-depth introduction to various careers in theatre and film that don’t require any acting talents. For four days from 26 – 29 May, participants in Behind the Scenes will work with professionals in the field to try their hand at costume, sound, set and lighting design or shooting and editing a short film. No experience is necessary.

The Carriageworks Young Theatre Makers, Carriageworks Theatre’s long-time resident youth theatre, are busy creating their end of year show, The Drowning, and will need a set to act on, costumes to wear, lights to be seen and sound to set the mood. Behind the Scenes: theatre design mini course participants will work with the show’s designers to learn about current industry technology and participate in creating designs for the final production.

Behind the Scenes: Film-making mini course participants will work with professionals from Studio 12, a Leeds audio-visual media project providing free access to a production studio, training and accredited qualifications. The group will gain hands-on training in digital shooting and editing techniques with the goal of creating a documentary short film about the theatre design group’s process. The documentary will be screened at Carriageworks Theatre on 25 July along-side performances of The Drowning as part of Breeze Arts Festival.

Councillor Lucinda Yeadon, Leeds City Council’s executive member for digital and creative technologies, culture and skills said:

“We have some really amazing creative talent in Leeds, and it is brilliant that through this exciting partnership between Carriageworks Theatre, Studio 12 and Breeze Arts Festival, there will be the chance in half term for young people to harness and learn a range of new skills from the experts.”
