A Renaissance Christmas
In the darkest month of the year, the Tallis Scholars light up the festive season with classic texts associated with Christmas from some of the lesser known master composers of the Renaissance.
The first half pairs one of the most influential motets of its time: Josquin's motet Praeter rerum seriem, with de Rore’s elaborate mass on the birth of Christ Missa Praetum rarum.
The second half continues the Christmas theme, proceeding through remarkable pieces by Victoria, de Sermisy (a Franco-Flemish composer in the generation after Josquin) and Mexican composer Hernando Franco. The evening culminates with John Taverner's most intricate and splendid antiphon in praise of the virgin, O splendor gloriae.
