Raised in pre-civil war Algeria, playing guitar in jeans and trainers, Souad Massi was going to get noticed: firstly for fronting a political rock band, then performing solo in Paris after fleeing death threats.
Following a sold-out concert at the Barbican in 2015, she comes north for a long-awaited duo show, exposing the lyricism and warmth of her extraordinary voice at close quarters.
This, her only UK performance outside London, interprets the music of her album El-Mutakallimûn (Masters of the Word), based on a millennium of Arabic poetry mixed with musical influences that include fado and African soul.
