JOKO means ‘connection’ in Wolof, a language of The Gambia and Senegal.
The connection has been between Musa M’Boob, Gambian master percussionist, and eight British jazz musicians in the Brighton area.
After his band Ifang Bondi, Musa has been working as a cultural ambassador promoting Gambian music both in the Gambia and in the UK and Europe.
Musa played with Alan Skidmore and Ubizo, then formed Xamxam with Ousman Beyai (former Ifang Bondi member). He is involved in many projects helping to bring musicians together from Europe and the Gambia.
JOKO is one of them!
Original material by the group and Musa together, along with great songs by Dudu Pukwana, Abdullah Ibrahim and others – a mix of Joko’s take on mbalax, South African township jazz, soukous, highlife and afrobeat. Jazz Africana. Joyful jazzy dance music!
Lisa Guile (saxes/flute), Linda Atkinson (saxes), Andy Pickett (saxes/flute), Linda Malone (congas), Michael Munday (guitar), John Bedford (bass), Wolf Luecker (keyboards), Phil Naylor (drums) and featuring Musa M’Boob, Gambian master percussionist.
