Heroes by Gerald Sibleyras.

This a delightful gentle, subtle comedy set in France in 1959. Translated from the French by Tom Stoppard, it tells of three veterans of the First World War, Philippe, Henri and Gustave who yearn to escape from their soldiers' home.

They dream of making it to Indochina but would settle for the hill before them with its swaying poplar trees.
