Summer Picnic Concerts: The Stranglers, Jawbone
Hampton Pool is now a well-established part of the south-west London summer season. Its beautiful open-air location is the perfect setting to enjoy a musical programme that mixes classic acts, brilliant performers and timeless music in an easy-going atmosphere.
Seventies punk icons whose rat-infested songs plagued both the album and singles charts through the subsequent decade. Their compounded musical talents and enthusiasm, infused with large doses of charisma and dark notoriety goes more than a little way to explaining why The Stranglers have survived the vagaries of the music business.
These days The Stranglers have at their core original members Jean-Jacques Burnel (bass), Dave Greenfield (keyboards), Jet Black (drums) and Baz Warne (guitar), with the lead vocals shared between Warne and Burnel (Burnel singing the songs he originally recorded as lead vocalist, and Warne performing the numbers originally sang by Hugh Cornwell).

Jawbone is a one-man band, that man being Bob Zabor of Detroit, who plays harmonica, guitar, and drums (well, bass drum and tambourine) and sings. Singing and playing his harmonica through a deliberately primitive microphone and putting his guitar through a tiny amp gives him a nicely down-home sound that recalls the sort of blues heard on small indie labels in the 50s. He's an excellent guitarist whose styles by turns suggest Lightning Hopkins, Zoot Horn Rollo, and hyper fill-all-the-space strumming.
