John Wheeler: Anonymous People

“My paintings begin with drawings of anonymous people that I see in the street, or sat in cafes, on trains etc.. I have no idea who they are. I draw them very quickly, with no attempt at a detailed likeness.

“I then paint an image from that drawing, during which my own memories and thoughts influence how the painting develops. The thin layers of paint are continually scratched through and sanded back to reveal the layers that are underneath.

“Through this process I try to create a painting of someone who is, for me unknown but familiar, and hope that the viewer, by bringing their own thoughts and memories to the image is able to set up their own ‘conversation’ with it.”

John Wheeler (b.1950) studied at Teeside University – but not until 2006/9. He has exhibited mainly in the North East of England and was introduced to Dean Clough by the artist Jake Attree. That says it all, really. The work, surely, does the rest...

Held in the Seminar Gallery.
