Pulcinella: Italian Inspiration

Join us for a taste of the Italian (via Russia and Germany) for our summer 2015 concert, with a blockbuster of a romantic concerto to boot.

Stravinsky called his music for the ballet 'Pulcinella' his "discovery of the past", a setting of early 18th Century Italian comedies viewed through his angular, early 20th Century lens. It was inspiration that would last: it marked the beginning of his 'neo-classical' period of composition. Mendelssohn was inspired by Italy almost a Century earlier than Stravinsky, and he sought to evoke the country's spirit and character in the music of his well-loved Symphony Number 4 in A major. And there are few composers as synonymous with Italy as Rossini, his Overture to the farcical romantic tale of La Scala di Seta is in his typically lively, flamboyant style. The romantic was never quite such a laughing matter for Brahms, and his searing Double Concerto, for Violin and Cello, explores the darkness as well as the light in equal measure. We are thrilled to be joined by soloists Kanako Ito (Associate Leader) and Martin Storey (Principal Cello), both of the BBC Scottish Symphony Orchestra, who are sure to make this a performance to remember.
