About Wadjda

The first feature film to be made entirely in Saudi Arabia by a female director. Wadjda is an 11-year-old tomboy growing up just outside conservative, suburban Riyadh. She longs to wear trainers and listen to rock music but it is frowned upon and her dreams of owning the green bicycle that she sees in a shop window every day on her way to school are considered unladylike. Her mother disapproves of her wish to race against a male neighbourhood friend but finds her time taken up by arguing with her husband. Wadjda tries to raise money for the bike by selling mix tapes and other banned goods in the playground. When she is caught by her teachers she enters a Koran recital competition for the prize money so that she can live out her cycling dream.
