About The Tree Of Life

This soulful family drama / work of art / pretentious drivel caused a stir when it was supposed to première in the UK before it went to Cannes, outraging the critical elite. Due to distribution issues its release was delayed. Terence Malick fans are used to waiting: his third film, 'The Thin Red Line' came twenty years after his second, 'Days Of Heaven.' The story follows Jack (played in adulthood by Sean Penn), the eldest son of a suburban family, from childhood to his disillusioned adult years. A lost soul, he questions the existence of faith in the modern world while coming to terms with the troubled relationship he had with his authoritarian father (Brad Pitt). His mother (Jessica Chastain), on the other hand, was a gentle, loving parent. Juxtaposed with Jack's life journey are stunning images of volcanoes erupting, underwater organisms and the cosmos. With very big ideas and a dreamlike yet arresting visual style, audiences will either love or hate this film, but Malick's boldness must be admired.
