About The Sense of an Ending
Jim Broadbent is perfectly cast as Tony Webster, in Ritesh Batra's adaptation of Julian Barnes's Booker Prize winning novel. Tony is the divorced owner of a tiny camera shop in London, with a heavily pregnant daughter and some long-buried secrets. This is a measured rumination on the flawed recollections of youth and the devastating consequences of rash decisions, beautifully acted and compellingly watchable. However the very nature of film is to be more literal than literature, meaning that much of the nuance and ambiguity which was the entire point of the book, is lost, leaving a sadly dull affair, oddly flat and unpoetic.
