About The Sapphires

Four young women living in a remote Aboriginal mission in the '60s find their lives take an unexpected turn when they meet a hapless Irishman. Sisters and singers Gail (Deborah Mailman), Julie (Jessica Mauboy) and Cynthia (Miranda Tapsell), together with their cousin Kay (Shari Sebbens) are spotted by talent scout Dave (Chris O'Dowd). He gets them away from country and western classics and into soul music. He decides to brand them as the new Supremes for Australia, and manages their image in the hope that they will become popular. Soon The Sapphires have bagged their first official gig singing for the troops in Vietnam. A feel-good celebration of friendship, music and love, the film is based on a true story and features lively renditions of soul classics.
