About The Queen

Fresh from winning an Emmy for her portrayal of Elizabeth I, Helen Mirren steps into the skin of current Queen, Elizabeth II, in a controversial account of the week after Princess Diana died. It's well documented that the monarchy faltered in the face of a huge and unexpected wave of public grief, hiding away behind the walls of Balmoral while new Prime Minister Tony Blair (Michael Sheen) upped his popularity further. Now using insider interviews and experts, writer Peter Morgan has attempted to dramatise what went on behind the scenes. The result is an interesting and sometimes humorous portrait of an extraordinary family in an unprecedented crisis, but you can't helping feeling there is a little too much dramatic licence on display here, given that less than a decade has gone by. Still, Mirren turns in another solid performance as the Queen.
