About The Polar Express

Santa Claus, the red-suited, mince pie-munching dispenser of dreams does not exist. Everybody over the age of six knows that. Or do we...? This is a staple theme of family-orientated yuletide movies, and it's revisited here in the latest animated blockbuster to hit the multiplexes. This time, a small boy, full of doubt over the issue of Father Christmas's existence, nontheless climbs into bed on 24th December hoping to hear the tinkle of sleigh bells outside his window. He is unsurprisingly amazed to hear not the thud of reindeer hooves on the roof then, but the whistle of steam train piercing the snowy night. The conductor of this magical train (Tom Hanks) invites him aboard The Polar Express. Initially unsure, the boy then joins many other similarly pyjama-wearing youngsters and toots off towards a magical adventure at the North Pole, where Santa has gifts aplenty for those who are still true believers... It's got reasonable animation and a good cast of voices, but it's definitely a children's movie. Unlike many recent animated hits, this one's squarely aimed at the kiddies, but there's worse ways you keep them entertained for a few hours.
