About The Master
Freddie Quell (Joaquin Phoenix) is a damaged, angry WWII veteran drifting through a drunken post-war existence. After an alcohol-induced blackout, he awakens on the yacht of the mysterious and wealthy Lancaster Dodd (Philip Seymour Hoffman). Freddie has nothing; Dodd is the charming, fatherly leader of a cult dedicated to something known as The Cause. While claiming to be open to the wonders of human potential and an expert on many subjects, Dodd also enjoys being the master of his disciples and he may not have pure intentions when he offers to help Freddie. Much has been said about the film being an allegory for the Scientology movement; whatever the case, interesting questions are raised about the nature of masculinity and religion and the performances are ferociously committed.
