About The Lady

A drama based on true events about one of the world's most famous politicians. Michelle Yeoh plays Aung San Suu Kyi, a Burmese opposition leader. Her mother was a Burmese ambassador, and her father helped to negotiate Burma's independence from Britain, for which he was assassinated. Suu Kyi decides to follow in her parents' footsteps and gives up her peaceful life with her husband Dr. Michael Aris (David Thewlis) to become a politician. Because she promotes the virtues of democracy, she is placed under house arrest in Burma, and rarely sees her family over the course of her fifteen year ordeal. Unlike director Luc Besson's previous depictions of strong heroines, Suu Kyi is no gun-toting tough chick. Instead, 'The Lady' aims to show the quiet resourcefulness and dignity of an iconic figure who sacrificed personal happiness for the rights of her people.
