About The Imposter

From an early age Frederic Bourdin would lie about his background, his family, his nationality; he would wander into orphanages claiming to be an abused teenager and fool teachers, pupils and police with elaborate stories of mistreatment. At an orphanage in Spain Bourdin (a Frenchman) came across a photo of missing Texan teenager Nicholas Barclay. After contacting the boy's sister, she came to pick him up. Her brother had been missing for three years and Bourdin explained the discrepancies in appearance by saying he'd been beaten and tortured with chemicals that could change a person's eye colour. He lived with the Barclays for months before the fraud was uncovered. This documentary investigates how a family could be so thoroughly duped into believing a twenty-something stranger was their young son, and Bourdin discusses his compulsion to lie for attention.
