About The House I Live In

A documentary about the War On Drugs. Stretching back to the Nixon years, drugs and their criminalisation have always been political hot potatoes. Millions of addicts have been arrested in that time, and American prisons grow ever more crowded with non-violent criminals serving lengthy sentences. Film-maker Eugene Jarecki attempts to examine the human cost of harsh punishments and the factor that class and race play in how the justice system works. Author Michelle Alexander and journalist (and creator of The Wire) David Simon give their opinions, while Jarecki's childhood nanny adds a personal perspective when she tells of how her family has been torn apart by drugs. The film argues that anti-drug laws are ineffective and driven by profit. But can there ever be a humane and practical solution?
