About The Butler

An historical drama from the director of Precious and The Paperboy, so don't expect subtlety. Cecil Gaines (Forest Whitaker) emerges from a difficult childhood filled with violence and injustice to become a young man struggling to find his place in the world. Through unconventional means he gets a job at a hotel and under the tutelage of master servant Maynard (Clarence Williams III), Cecil learns some top-notch butlering techniques. Eventually he marries and has children, and during the Eisenhower administration he is hired as a butler at the White House. While Cecil watches a parade of distracting cameos from talented actors trying their best to impersonate various presidents, his eldest son Louis (David Oyelowo) goes to university and begins to question the inequality of his surroundings.
