About The Book Thief
Based on a bestselling young adult novel about the Second World War. The narrator (Roger Allam) is Death himself, but the film has a heartwarming tone. Nine-year-old Liesel (Sophie Nelisse) is devastated when her younger brother dies and her mother has to flee Nazi-led Germany. She is taken in by housepainter Hans Hubermann (Geoffrey Rush) and his grumpy wife Rosa (Emily Watson). At first she is bullied at school for being illiterate, but the sweet and patient Hans teaches her how to read. The Hubermanns find themselves in a difficult position when a young Jewish acquaintance shows up at their house asking for protection. They shelter him and he also encourages Liesel's fascination with words. In response to the injustices around her she begins to steal books and share them with others.
