About Springtime in a Small Town
Some films traverse the cultural divide between countries better then others. The Japanese horror genre has been particularly successful in Western cinemas for example. On this basis, the Chinese love story may take a little more time and effort to get used to. The tale of a young woman in a failing marriage and the subsequent arrival of her husband's old college friend is a premise that is recognisable enough. Yet, despite its undoubted beauty, the cinematography, editing and direction leave the viewer firmly on the outside of the story and its characters. A flawed beauty.
