Kate (Mary Elizabeth Winstead) is a bright, pretty primary school teacher who is devoted to her students. She also likes to have a good time and get drunk with her husband Charlie (Aaron Paul) who has a less responsible job as a songwriter. Through a series of mishaps and an increasing need to drink most of the time, Kate hits rock bottom and realises that she has an alcohol problem. With the encouragement of her stiff but well-meaning colleague (Nick Offerman) she goes to an Alcoholics Anonymous meeting and finds a sponsor (Octavia Spencer). But she struggles to convince Charlie of the seriousness of her situation, and begins to wonder if they are soul-mates or just addicts who enable each other.
