Alcoholic advertising executive Joe Doucett (Josh Brolin) blacks out one night in 1993 and comes to in a small, locked room. Meals and vodka are given to him once a day but he sees and speaks to no-one. From the TV in the room he learns that he has been framed for his wife's murder and vows to get revenge when he is freed. He has a long wait, and over the next twenty years he weans himself off alcohol and practises martial arts with the help of the TV's instructional programmes. When he is abruptly released he tracks down the man responsible for his torment.
