About No

An uplifting drama about the Chilean national plebiscite of 1988, which resulted in dictator Augusto Pinochet falling from power. Facing the first free election for two decades, those in opposition to Pinochet (the 'No' party) scramble to create an ad that will convince people to vote against him. Their campaign video is full of depressing iamgery and references to Pinochet's many crimes. Up-and-coming adman Rene Saavedra (Gael García Bernal) decides to work with the 'No' party, and suggests a somewhat audacious tactic: creating a video that is upbeat and aspirational. He juggles his political work with a job on a trashy soap opera. But his background in consumerism can't keep him and his family safe from Pinochet's supporters, who are rattled by the public's optimism. Helping add authenticity, this film was made entirely on a 1980s U-Matic camera.
