About Murderball (2005)
This is a life-affirming documentary from the mould of Hoop Dreams about the hyper-competitive world of wheelchair rugby and the men who play the sport. It follows the fortunes of the American and Canadian "quad ball" teams, as they are known, for two years prior to the 2004 Paralympic Games. The action shots are breathtaking but even more interesting are the characters and their tales, including Murderball legends Mark Zupan and Joe Soares. It's both pricelessly funny and painfully poignant without ever resorting to patronising schmaltz. The result is a sports film even more dramatic and touching than any Hollywood bigwig could dare to dream of. Highly recommended.
