Two families attempt to improve their relationships when they learn of an impending disaster in this thought-provoking drama. Beautiful young couple Justine (Kirsten Dunst) and Michael (Alexander Skarsgård) are celebrating their marriage. Justine has a promising career ahead of her but is troubled by despairing thoughts, and she feels ill at ease with her sister Claire (Charlotte Gainsbourg) and the rest of her family. Their fun-loving father (John Hurt) and bitter mother (Charlotte Rampling) have an argument at the wedding dinner and sour the atmosphere, but there is worse to come. Everybody gathers at Claire's luxurious home some time later, and Justine has become even more depressed. When she notices a star shining more brightly than the others in the sky, it heralds the arrival of real devastation: a planet called Melancholia is on a collision course with Earth.
