In spring 1945, the Allied Forces win the war and the German army is defeated. A German family's life is upended when the Nazi regime is overthrown. The father, an SS officer, hurriedly burns documents and makes plans to get the family to safety along with his supportive wife but it is too late and both parents disappear soon after. Their five children are left to fend for themselves. They undertake a long journey to reach their grandmother who lives in the North, led by the eldest child, fourteen-year-old Lore (Saskia Rosendahl). With only a vague idea of how to get there and the country falling apart around them, the children come to realise the fallacy in their indoctrinated beliefs. Lore feels conflicted when she meets a concentration camp survivor (Kai Malina).
