A gritty northern drama in which a young boy befriends a kestrel which gives him the love and freedom that his life cannot otherwise provide. 15 year old Billy Casper has little hope for his future, believing that he will follow in his brother's footsteps and become a coal miner when he grows up. He steals from milkfloats, gets into trouble with his teachers, and has been resigned as a 'hopeless case' by his mother. When he takes a baby kestrel from its nest on a farm, he finds an escape from his pedestrian existence, and a powerful bond develops between him and 'Kes'. This moving drama is an early example of the critically acclaimed, startlingly raw exploration of working class life for which Ken Loach is famous.
