About Into The Abyss

Another astonishing and affecting documentary from Werner Herzog, director of 'Cave Of Forgotten Dreams' and 'Grizzly Man.' His subject is the death penalty and its effects in the state of Texas, focusing on the story of Michael Perry and Jason Burkett who shot three people while stealing a car. Unlike some documentarians, Herzog's aim is not to crusade for the release of prisoners or uncover new evidence in cold cases. Rather, he gathers first-hand accounts of how the death penalty affects prisoners and their executioners, pastors and families of murder victims. It's missing his insightful and seemingly detached audio commentary, which has almost become his trademark. But in its place are the testimonies of people on both sides of the crime whose lives have been torn apart by violence and tragedy.
