Academy Award-winning director Pete Docter (Monsters, Inc. and Up) takes the helm as Pixar return with Inside Out. When her father begins a new job in San Francisco, 11 year old Riley (Kaitlyn Dias) is forced to confront the host of new and confusing emotions that come with being uprooted from a previously happy existence. While her parents struggle to read Riley's changing mood, we're introduced to the five emotions that guide her daily life and are situated in her 'headquarters' – Joy (Amy Poehler), Fear (Bill Hader), Anger (Lewis Black), Disgust (Mindy Kaling) and Sadness (Phyllis Smith). This mission control desk is in charge of creating memories – in the form of glowing balls – and storing them away in the outer reaches of Riley's mind while she sleeps. When Joy and Sadness fight over the fate of a long-term memory, they are locked out of the command centre, leaving Riley in a state of emotional flux. While the colourful characters are perhaps not as instantly iconic as earlier Pixar creations Woody, Buzz et al, the personification of emotions and exploration of the inner workings of a young girl's mind make for an ambitious and surprisingly sophisticated coming of age tale.
