A family fantasy adventure set in 1930s Paris. Hugo (Asa Butterfield) is an orphan who lives in the walls of a train station. His father (Jude Law) was killed in a fire, and his drunken uncle (Ray Winstone) has disappeared. Instead, Hugo does his uncle's job, and regulates all the clocks in the station. He lives by stealing food from snack stalls and evading the pompous station inspector (Sacha Baron Cohen). Hugo is intent on fixing the mechanical figure that his father was working on before he died, and steals parts from a shop owned by the grumpy Papa Georges (Ben Kingsley). One day Hugo meets Isabelle (Chloë Grace Moretz), a spirited young girl who is also Papa Georges god-daughter. Strangely, Isabelle has a key that fits the keyhole in Hugo's mechanical figure, and together they work to repair it.
