About Holy Motors
A very bizarre and brilliant movie that received rapturous praise at Cannes. Ostensibly set in Paris but occasionally morphing into a film set or alien-seeming landscapes, it follows Monsieur Oscar (Denis Lavant), a strange man with a strange occupation. Ferried around in a white stretch limo by his assistant Celine (Edith Scob), he has masses of costumes and make-up which he uses to prepare for his assignments. Disguised as an old woman, a tramp, a clown or an assassin, he visits various people and performs some predetermined task, ranging from driving a young girl home to kidnapping a supermodel (Eva Mendes). To what purpose, we do not know. Under whose orders, we are not told. But in each situation Oscar immerses himself totally in his role: is he really playing a part, or is he somehow all these things: father, lover, threat, actor?
