About Devil's Knot
In 1993, the bodies of three young children were found mutilated in a creek in West Memphis, Arkansas. Local teenagers Jessie Misskelley Jr, Jason Baldwin and Damien Echols were arrested for the crime. This was just the start of an eighteen-year-long long ordeal for the West Memphis Three that brought them to the brink of state-sanctioned execution. After several excellent documentaries on the case, director Atom Egoyan (well-versed in tales of loss) weighs in with a flat, sombre drama that depicts the boys' arrest and its effects on their community. Hand-wringing Reese Witherspoon slums it in baggy clothes as the mother of one of the murdered boys, while a typically understated Colin Firth plays a private investigator who volunteers his services to the police and ends up becoming obsessed.
