Chicago

Image for Chicago

Bob Fosse's heady musical mixture of sex, stardom betrayal and murder in 1920s Chicago arrives on the big screen with mixed success. Zellewegger shines as the duplicitous Roxie Hart, but Zeta-Jones is underused and Richard Gere sounds too much like David Essex for comfort. The gritty, murderously dark tone converts well, but lacks the sparkle to reach the heady heights of Luhrmann. Entertaining and fun, but still a chorus girl compared to Moulin Rouge.
