About Chasing Ice
National Geographic photographer James Balog was once sceptical about climate change, but after conducting a survey he discovered compelling evidence of its effects. His story on glaciers was one of the magazine's most read and popular pieces, so he embarked on a multi-year project to show the changes in the world's ice-caps. Film-maker Jeff Orlowski followed Balog as he crossed three continents and recorded his difficulties in hiking to such remote places and maintaining camera equipment in subzero conditions. Years fly by in seconds as Balog's footage shows the beautiful and ancient ice-caps disappearing, captured via thirty time-lapse cameras. As well as being a travelogue for an ambitious project, the documentary raises questions about our dependency on carbon power and its effect on the planet.
