About Boxing Day
Director Bernard Rose's re-imagining of Tolstoy's Master And Man, following on from previous adaptations Ivansxtc and Kreutzer Sonata. His frequent collaborator Danny Huston plays Basil, a pompous property speculator. Hearing of a string of foreclosures in Colorado on Boxing Day, he neglects his family to drive around greedily closing deals with unlucky former home-owners. It doesn't matter if an elderly lady is unsure about signing over her property to him; Basil is happy to lie and wheedle to get his hands on some low-priced real estate. While going about his grim errands, he is chauffeured by local taxi driver Nick (Matthew Jacobs), whose alcoholism and violent tendencies have estranged him from his own family. The worsening weather promises to teach both men a lesson in humility.
