About Big Miracle

An animal rescue drama set in Barrow, Alaska and based on a true story. In 1988 reporter Adam (John Krasinski) is stuck in the snowy town doing boring stories about avocadoes. When a family of whales become trapped in walls of ice with five miles between them and the open ocean, he senses potential in the story. Adam's ex-girlfriend Rachel (Drew Barrymore) is a Greenpeace volunteer who becomes involved. She asks the state governor (Stephen Root) for a ship, but he doesn't believe it's an important issue. One press campaign later, and he's shaking hands with whale mascots and vowing to save those poor creatures. At one point, another ship is needed, but the only one within range is a Soviet ice-breaker, and it seems as though the Cold War could get in the way of the operation.
