A sumptuous period drama loosely based on the unusual story of an aristocratic mixed race woman living in 17th Century Britain. Dido Elizabeth Belle (played by the ridiculously beautiful Gugu Mbatha-Raw) is the illegitimate daughter of a Royal Navy officer. Her father leaves her in the care of her uncle, Lord Mansfield (Tom Wilkinson), who is also Lord Chief Justice of England and Wales. Dido grows up alongside her cousin Elizabeth Murray (Sarah Gadon) and although she enjoys the finer things in life and retains some privileges due to her standing, she soon realises that the colour of her skin sets her apart from everybody else. Meanwhile, Lord Mansfield must deliberate over a court case that could affect rulings on slavery.
