A drama that examines the effects of ageing, love and death through closely observing a single partnership. Retired music teachers Anne (Emmanuelle Riva) and Georges (Jean-Louis Trintignant) live comfortably together in a flat filled with books and records. A cultured pair, they have been a couple for many years. But their gentle existence is disrupted when Anna suffers a stroke. Determined not to spend her remaining days in a hospital, she is instead cared for at home by Georges. As her condition worsens she becomes irritable, although George tries to be attentive to her needs. Though their daughter (Isabelle Huppert) and son-in-law (William Shimell) come to visit, they are too busy with their own lives to offer much support. So Georges and Anna remain disconnected from the world during Anna's final months until the time comes for them to be separated forever.
