University admissions officer Portia Nathan (Tina Fey) evaluates thousands of hopeful applicants for Princeton every year. Her life is dominated by routine and her relationship with her boyfriend Michael (Michael Sheen) is on the rocks. When Portia's boss (Wallace Shawn) announces his retirement, she becomes aware of her possible future as his successor. But then she takes a recruiting trip and meets her old classmate, free-spirited teacher John Pressman (Paul Rudd), who is hoping to get his brilliant but under-achieving student Jeremiah (Nat Wolff) into Princeton. John has also managed to find out that Jeremiah could be the son that Portia gave up for adoption sixteen years ago. Portia feels that she should help Jeremiah, but her colleagues disagree and her artistic, feminist mother (Lily Tomlin) thinks she shouldn't get involved.
