All Points East Festival 2019
All Points East returns for a stellar second year to Tower Hamlet’s Victoria Park, following a sold-out 2018 debut that established a new and essential music event in central London.
The latest headliner is the iconic Bon Iver, who will close out the second edition of All Points East on Sunday 2nd June – a performance that will be the band’s biggest ever headline show to date.
Accompanying Bon Iver on the bill is Mac DeMarco, Sweden’s First Aid Kit, American singer-songwriter John Grant, Swedish singer Kristian Matsson AKA Tallest Man On Earth, Julien Baker, Snail Mail and KOKOKO!
Bon Iver is the name singer/songwriter Justin Vernon chose for his solo project when he retreated to a cabin in Wisconsin during 2006. He emerged from the isolation with an album - For Emma, Forever Ago - that became an indie folk touchstone. The gentle strumming of acoustic guitars, subtle arrangements, and Vernon's swooning falsetto combined to create a mood that felt like backwoods Radiohead recorded by candlelight. It was a sound that resonated with a great many people, and Vernon became something of a bearded sensation feted by outlets as diverse as Mojo and Late Night with David Letterman, and collaborating with Kanye West (the first of many hookups with hip-hop artists through the following years). Bon Iver swung away from the hushed intimacy of the first LP in favour of a bigger, near-orchestral sound that had elements of late-night R&B as well on 2011's Bon Iver, and then took a detour into jagged electronica on 2016's 22, A Million. Vernon blended the various streams of the Bon Iver sound into a cohesive whole on 2019's I, I, an album that features almost 50 musicians.

Combining a goofball public persona with a distinctive songwriting style and production sound, Canadian artist Mac DeMarco rose to the higher reaches of indie fame unexpectedly quickly. While his image projected a charmingly laid-back slacker prone to occasional antics and never taking anything too seriously, his songs have ironically often hid mature themes like aging, commitment, and morals under layers of chorus and reverb.

First Aid Kit
Swedish duo First Aid Kit, as their name suggests, will heal and ease the pain. Comprising sisters Johanna and Klara Söderberg, their soothing brand of Indie-Folk with the odd hint of Country has seen them grow from cult status to playing sell-out tours and achieving gold and platinum albums with 'The Lion's Roar' and 'Stay Gold'. They have worked with Jack White, sung for Patti Smith and toured with Bright Eyes and Lykke Li.

Former lead vocalist with cult band The Czars, the Denver-born singer has since carved out a far more successful career for himself as a solo artist. His style has smoothly moved from dark indie-folk to more upbeat ventures with electronic-pop and an orchestral collaboration with the BBC Philharmonic. He was nominated as Best International Male Solo Artist at the BRITS 2014 and continues to be heaped with critical praise upon every release.

"A young man in a dress and vigorously applied make-up, singing about his Jewish faith, his depression, his anger and his joy, to a backing of 50s rock’n’roll, interspersed with bits of garage rock and Velvet Undergroundish R&B. Imagine Jonathan Richman’s even nerdier younger brother, from Chicago rather than Boston, and you’re partway there" - The Guardian From Chicago, Illinois, Ezra Furman showcases his Springsteen/Young/Dylan-esque sounds with a wry sense of humour and wild story telling. Crossing between love, gender, sexuality and religion, Ezra has soundtracked the current fear and loathing across America like no other, while pushing ahead with his own agenda.

Ry X was the first signing to Dumont Dumont. The Australian born, Los Angeles based musician burst on to the scene with his debut EP 'Berlin' and the response was staggering. He strips away all the gimmicky elements and delivers beautifully captivating tracks which are incredibly powerful yet simple. He sometimes strays into Bon Iver / Ben Howard territory, but in an original and masterful way.

'Snail Mail is the lo-fi bedroom pop project of singer-songwriter Lindsey Jordan. She's a thoughtful lyricist who tends to buck the 'woe is me' cliche in favour of a wider, balanced perspective focused on forward motion. This refreshing view is shared over dreary textures, slow moving guitar work and Jordan's effortlessly melodic vocal presence.'

KOKOKO! is an explosive new band with an alternative sound crafted in Kinshasa, DRC, made up of local artists, instrument inventors and prolific French producer débruit. The project came about when production company La Belle Kinoise (Staff Benda Bilili, Jupiter’s Dance), invited débruit to Kinshasa for a month-long residency in 2016 to collaborate with the innovative artists they were documenting across the emerging contemporary art scene. After building a recording studio together out of mattresses, wood they could find and the rest of a broken ping pong table, the Congolese musicians and the itinerant Breton producer began exploring each other’s ideas, sounds, and cultural influences. By the end of a month of working intensely in their new studio, exploring Kinshasa by night, and sleeping whenever there was a spare moment, they had the bones of a debut album and KOKOKO! was born.

Charlie Cunningham is a London-based indie singer/songwriter who specialises in spacy, spectral introspection. He is usually backed by just his acoustic guitar and plenty of echo. Making a move to Seville to hone his guitar technique acted as a catalyst to his creativity. Taking the percussive and rhythmic qualities he developed there, he began to thread his individual approach together.
