An August Epiphany

Set in the 1930’s period of austerity the play focuses on the probable reasons for Johnny Fulton’s torment. He has survived the great war and the Irish war of independence and seeks refuge in drink which also relieves the unhappiness of his marriage to Mary. An old acquaintance of both Johnny and Mary arrives unexpectedly to offer Johnny an opportunity to augment his meagre wages.

The malign atmosphere of the marriage relationship is revealed while the weekly visit of the insurance collector provides Johnny with the opportunity to engage in political discussion. Mary’s enforced poverty is highlighted by the surprise visit of her employer, an affluent middle class lady of leisure. Johnny, a convinced atheist, is confronted by the new parish curate on house calls to his congregation.

In an unwelcome attempt to exorcise Johnny’s demons through confession, the curate unwittingly discovers a shameful secret.
