When in Hertfordshire, Jack Worthing, is guardian to pretty 18 year old Cecily Cardew, the granddaughter of the late Thomas Cardew, who found and adopted Jack when he was a baby.

When in London, Jack is in love with Gwendolen Fairfax, the cousin of his best friend, Algernon Moncrieff (Algy) and daughter of the imposing Lady Bracknell.

Algernon (Lady Bracknells nephew) only knows Jack as Earnest in London and suspects that Jack may be leading a double life, otherwise known as Bunburying, falls in love with Cecily. Meanwhile, Miss Prism, Cecilys governess, is attracted to the Rev. Chasuble, the local rector on Jacks estate.

Oscar Wildes deliciously confusing 1890s comedy is full of words and wonderful characterisation.
