Cheltenham Concert Series
Schumann:
Piano Concerto in A minor, Op.54
Elgar:
Symphony No.1 in A flat, Op.55
Tonight the BBC National Orchestra of Wales' Principal Guest Conductor will work his magic on Elgar's epic First Symphony which, despite its outward Edwardian pomp and circumstance, is suffused with sombre and introspective undercurrents.
Schumann's Piano Concert began life as a Phantasie for piano and orchstra. Later he reworked the music, adding an internezzo and a finale, but the manner in which he transforms the opening theme confers on the work a sense of unity. It is deservedly one of the most popular concertos in the repertoire.
Tonight's distinguished soloist, John Lill, has been at the forefront of music making for over 50 years:
"he is one of the greatest pianists alive today; an intellectual giant and a master craftsman." - Glasgow Herald
